4 Days Trip From Marrakech To Fes – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech, High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Rose Valley, Boumalne Dades (about 6 hours drive)

Your 4 Days Trip From Marrakech To Fes begins with an early pick-up from the airport or your hotel in Marrakech. We head out toward the High Atlas Mountains and drive over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, we stop at scenic viewpoints for great photos.

Next, we visit the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a well-known fortified village. It has also been used as a filming location for movies like Gladiator, Alexander, and The Mummy, plus the TV series Game of Thrones.

After that, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the desert. If time allows, you can visit Atlas Studios, where many films were shot. Then we drive on to the Rose Valley. Each May, locals celebrate the Rose Festival and sell rose products like perfume, rose water, oils, and cosmetics.

By evening, we arrive in Boumalne Dades. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel or riad.

Day 2Boumalne Dades, Todra Gorges, Erfoud, Merzouga Sahara, luxury camp (about 5 hours drive)

After breakfast, take in the impressive views of the Dades Gorges. We then drive to the Todra Gorges, where the Todra River carved a deep canyon between tall red cliffs. You’ll have free time to walk through the gorge and enjoy the scenery. Lunch is on your own.

In the afternoon, we reach Merzouga and the edge of the Sahara. Here, you switch to camels for a ride across the dunes. We pause on a high dune so you can watch the sunset over the sand.

After sunset, you continue to your luxury desert camp. Enjoy Berber drum music and time around the campfire under a star-filled sky. Dinner and overnight in the camp.

Day 3Merzouga area tour, nomads, Khamlia, Merzouga Lake, Erg Chebbi, palm grove (about 2 hours drive)

An early wake-up is recommended so you can catch sunrise in the desert. After breakfast, you ride camels back to Merzouga, where your driver meets you. Today is all about exploring the Merzouga region. You’ll see a mix of dunes, desert landscapes, small lakes, fossil areas, and green oases.

We start with an off-road drive to an old kohl (eyeliner) mine. Then we visit local nomads in their hand-woven tent. You’ll learn about their daily life while sharing a cup of Berber tea.

Next is Khamlia village, known for Gnawa music and dance. Many residents have roots in sub-Saharan countries such as Mali, Sudan, and Niger. After free time for lunch at a local restaurant, we take a walk through a palm grove.

Later, we visit Merzouga Lake, also called Flamingo Lake when water levels bring birds to the area. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.

Day 4Merzouga, Rissani, Erfoud, Midelt, Cedars Forest, Ifrane, Fes (about 7 hours drive)

On the final day of your 4 days tour from Marrakech to Fes, we leave the dunes and head to Rissani, the former capital of Tafilalet. Rissani is still an important trade town, with a busy souk on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After time in the market, we continue to Erfoud to visit a workshop that works with fossilized marble.

We then drive along the Ziz River and stop for panoramic views over the Ziz Valley. Lunch is in Midelt. After that, we head to the Cedars Forest, home to Barbary macaques. You can walk through the forest and, if you choose, feed the monkeys.

Next, we stop in Ifrane, known for its cool weather, snow in winter, and alpine-style homes. Many people call it the Switzerland of Morocco.

Finally, we drop you off at your accommodation or the airport in Fes. End of your Marrakech to Fes 4 day Sahara tour, also known as the 4 day desert tour Marrakech to Fes.

FAQ

What’s a typical 4-day Marrakech to Fes itinerary like?

Most 4-day routes go from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains, down to southern valleys and gorges, into the Sahara (Merzouga, Erg Chebbi dunes), then north through the Middle Atlas to Fes. You’ll cover roughly 1,000 to 1,200 km total, with about 4 to 8 hours of driving per day, depending on stops.

A common flow looks like this: Day 1 takes you over Tizi n’Tichka Pass (about 2,260 m), with a stop at Ait Benhaddou and an overnight in the Dades Valley area. Day 2 includes Todra Gorge, then continues to Merzouga for a camel trek and desert camp. Day 3 is often a slower day in and around the dunes (sunrise, short 4×4 excursions, or just rest time). Day 4 is the long drive to Fes via Ziz Valley, Midelt, Azrou’s cedar forest (often with Barbary macaques), and Ifrane.

What type of vehicle is used for this tour?

A private, air-conditioned 4×4 or minivan is provided, depending on the group size, ensuring comfort during long drives.

How long is the drive each day, and is it too much time in the car?

It’s a road-heavy trip, but that’s the tradeoff for seeing big scenery in a short window. Expect the longest driving days on Day 1 (about 6 to 7 hours, roughly 330 to 350 km) and Day 4 (about 7 to 8 hours, roughly 470 to 500 km). Day 2 is usually more manageable (often 4 to 5 hours, around 270 km, plus stops). Day 3 is commonly a desert-focused day with minimal driving.

It doesn’t usually feel like nonstop driving because you break it up with viewpoint stops, short walks (Ait Benhaddou, Todra), and meal stops. If you get carsick or prefer slow travel, ask for fewer stops and earlier departures, or consider a 5-day version so the final push into Fes isn’t as long.

What’s usually included in a 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour?

In most private 4×4 style tours, the basics include transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver or guide, and the headline experiences: Ait Benhaddou, the valleys and gorges (Dades, Todra), and Merzouga with the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Tours commonly include a camel trek to or from the camp and an overnight in a desert camp, sometimes listed as a “luxury” camp with private bathroom depending on the package. Breakfasts are often included, and many itineraries include some dinners (commonly at the desert camp and one hotel night).

What’s often not included: lunches, drinks, tips, and some entry fees at individual sites. If you care about the camp setup (private tent, hot shower, real bed), confirm the exact camp category in writing before you book.

How much does a 4-day Marrakech to Fes trip cost in 2026?

Pricing varies a lot by season, group size, and the level of accommodation. Recent 2026 listings for private Marrakech to Fes desert tours commonly show a range of about $390 to $936 per adult. You’ll often see prices drop when two or more people book together because the vehicle cost is shared.

In many cases, the headline price covers the driver, vehicle, main overnights, and the camel trek. You should still budget extra for items that are commonly excluded, such as lunches, personal drinks, tips (often quoted as a per-day amount for the driver), and small entry fees at select stops.

If you’re comparing options, look beyond the total price and check what class of hotel or riad is used for the non-desert nights, plus whether the desert camp is standard or upgraded.

Are the roads safe from Marrakech to Fes via the desert route?

For most travelers, yes, this is a well-traveled route on paved national roads used by tour operators and buses daily. The main challenge isn’t road quality, it’s the mountain driving and the number of hours on the road. The High Atlas crossing (including Tizi n’Tichka) is winding, and conditions can change with rain or fog, so daytime driving matters.

Professional drivers typically avoid night driving and know where to slow down for tight bends, trucks, and roadside activity. Desert access roads can be rough near the dunes, but the long-distance sections between towns are generally straightforward.

To keep it comfortable, pick a tour that plans realistic drive times, starts early on the longest days, and allows breaks. If you’re self-driving, plan conservative arrival times and check weather before the Atlas crossing.

When is the best time to do this tour?

The tour can be done year-round, but the best time is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) when temperatures are pleasant.

Is it safe to travel to the desert?

Yes. The route is popular with tourists, and you’ll have an experienced driver and guide. Camel treks and desert activities are organized with safety in mind.
